Guaranteed Ride Home
Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) is a benefit offered by many counties and employers to take the worry of being “stranded without a car” out of ridesharing. The program provides commuters who regularly carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or take transit to work with a reliable and free ride home – usually in a taxi or rental car – when unexpected emergencies arise.
Program details, including eligibility, ride home logistics and types of emergencies covered, vary from program to program depending on what organization is administering the benefit. To find out if there is a GRH program in your home or work county, visit the County Incentives section of this website.
In general, GRH programs follow these guidelines:
GRH may be used in cases of:
- Personal or family emergency
- Personal or family illness
- Unscheduled overtime, with supervisor's verification
- Unexpected early departure of rideshare partner
GRH may not be used for:
- Personal/pre-scheduled appointments, such as doctor visits
- Weather emergencies or unexpected acts of nature
- Pre-arranged overtime
- Business-related travel
- Any rides TO work
Commuter Tax Benefits
Did you know you can pay for certain commute costs with pre-tax dollars and reap the benefits every day? Under Section 132F of federal tax code, an employer can offer its employees up to $110 per month for transit and vanpool costs and up to $215 in qualified parking costs.
Here’s how to take advantage of the benefit:
- Find out if your employer offers Commuter Tax Benefits. Your Human Resources staff should be able to tell you. If they don't, you can see if they'll consider offering it. Or, you can contact an Employer Services Representative of the 511 Regional Rideshare Program and we’ll contact your employer about the program.
If you are driving a van, but your vanpool is not registered with our 511 Ridematch Service, you may be missing out on some of these great benefits.
- Make sure you’re using a qualifying commute alternative. The benefit is available to commuters who are in a vanpool, take public transit or use qualified parking. (Carpooling is unfortunately not a qualified alternative because it is difficult to account for its costs. Click on County Incentives to learn about local incentives available for carpoolers.)

EMPLOYER
Congestion Management Program

Whether your employer has five or 50,000 employees, Eco Pass can make a difference. Eco Pass provides employers of all sizes with a way to offer an attractive, low-cost employee benefit and to lessen the demand for on-site parking.
Employers purchase annual Eco Pass stickers for all full-time employees at a given worksite, paying one low cost. Pricing levels - which are based on proximity to VTA services and your number of employees - are just a fraction of the cost of standard monthly passes.
Your employees simply affix the stickers to the back of their VTA-produced photo ID cards, and the entire VTA fleet is at their service.
